Years ago, we went on a fantastic road trip to Jackson, Wyoming with extended family. We rented cute little cabins in the mountains by a beautiful lake. It was July, 2003, but we still had a little bit of snow on a couple of the days when we were there. It was a perfect place to get away.
The cabins we chose had two options: some were rustic (no plumbing) and some were not. We all chose the ones with plumbing, but there were those options available should anyone really want to rough it. There are a lot of cabin units available in Wyoming, so you would have lots of options to choose from.
We spent a lot of time around the lake, fishing, hiking and roasting s'mores. It was a great way to enjoy family time.
One day, we decided to go for a horseback ride. We went along this trail that led throught the woods, crossed little creeks and opened up to wonderful mountain views! It was an awesome experience!
One of the great things about a vacation like this is the time you have to build relationships. People become closer sitting around the fire telling stories. You build better relationships with extended family, with your children and with your spouse. It's a slower pace and you take time for all the things you don't always have time to enjoy when you aren't on vacation.
There is so much to see and do in the area. One of our side trips was a visit to Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. We learned that Gutzon Borglum and his son finished carving these four presidents in 1941. He chose George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln because he felt they had made the biggest impact on our nation. George Washington represented the birth of our country. Thomas Jefferson represented the growth of our country. Theodore Roosevelt represented the development our country, and Abraham Lincoln represented the preservation of our country.
Wyoming and South Dakota should be on everyone's bucket list. If you want to plan your own trip, check out some of the links below.
